Visit to the Royal Irish Academy Monday June 17th 2024

Pages from the original copy of the annals

The group was welcomed to the Royal Irish Academy by Meadhbh Murphy the Leas-Leabharlannaí / Deputy Librarian. She had on view one of the volumes of the Annals of the Four Masters. We were allowed to take some photographs of the pages. This book of the annals was mounted on paper and bound in the 19th Century by the conservators at the Academy preserving these precious manuscripts. It was a very interesting and emotional afternoon seeing such an important manuscript which done so much to preserve the history of Ireland.

  1. My Uncle Brian Clary, was recently contacted by a family member via the Ancestry DNA match. How do we verify that we we are descended from the original clan or not? We have been doing our research together for quite awhile, but it really opened up once we had his DNA testing done. Love the site and am eager to learn more!

    1. Hello Michelle,
The UíCléirigh clan is a difficult one to trace because it dispersed to different parts of Ireland in the 13th Century so essentially clusters can be found in nearly every county in Ireland! Added to this the name has many variants Clery Cleary Clary or fully anglicised as Clarke Clark Clerke.
DNA testing is very useful but does depend on the type of test to what it can reveal and is good when all other avenues are exhausted. However if possible it is best to try direct family research.
      Best wishes,

  2. Our family so enjoyed the visit to the Royal Irish Academy. Thank you so much for arraigning this Madeleine.

    1. Hello James,
Hope you and your family are all well in St Paul. Our Summer School which was to take place on the weekend of 8th-10th May has been postponed until this Covid 19 lockdown is over. However in reality it will probably be held over until 2021.
We really enjoyed meeting you all in Dublin last May and I hope you all keep safe over this terrible time.
      Best wishes,

  4. I’d like to attend any Clery gathering this year 2020. Was informed about such an event which took place In Rossnowlagh last year. Both my parents were CLERY.

    1. Hello Maureen,
Glad you are enjoying our website- Unfortunately due to the Covid 19 lockdown here in Ireland it is very unlikely that the Mícheál Ó Cléirigh Summer School will take place this May. We hope we can reschedule towards the end of the year but we cannot be definite.
We will continue to research our Clan history and hopefully we can carry forth our events next year.
      Best wishes,
